Chondromalacia patella
Knee pain – Chondromalacia patella
Chondromalacia patella means breakdown (malacia) of cartilage (chondro) behind the knee cap (patella).
The patella is covered with a layer of smooth (articular) cartilage. This cartilage normally glides effortlessly across the knee during activities such as running or stair climbing, where bending the knee is involved in the activity. In patients with knee pain from chondromalacia patella, the patella starts to rub against one side of the knee joint and the cartilage surface become irritated.
In many patients we see, the patella has moved out of the groove in the femur through which it passes during motion of the knee. Prolotherapy(1) and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy stimulates the growth of articulate cartilage and strengthens the supporting ligaments and tendons, which keep the joints properly aligned and thereby protect the cartilage from erosion caused by friction.
