Far too many patients call a bad headache a "migraine headache" when, in fact, it is initiated by spots in the back of the head (occiput), neck, or back.
If you are unlucky to have chronic headaches, you may be lucky because these type of headaches can be healed with Prolotherapy treatments.
In my book, Prolotherapy, Living Pain Free, you will see a drawing of the trigger points that can refer pain to the head and cause headaches. These spots are like finding gold to the Prolotherapist.
"Why?" you may be wondering. Well, if collagen growth can stabilize these areas, the headaches can resolve.
Headaches are so common after a whiplash injury or fall on the head. If the ligaments of the neck become lax from injury, headaches from this referral pattern from the neck to the head can often be healed with Prolotherapy injections.
Patient Success Story: One of my favorite headache stories is about a male patient that came to my Los Angeles clinic complaining that he had headaches that felt like there was a hot poker in his right eye.
He was sitting on the examination table with his wife watching as I palpated his neck and back. During my examination, I located a spot. When I pressed on it, his eye pain increased.
I asked him if he would mind me injecting that spot for his headache. He and his wife looked at each other in disbelief at my request as if to say, “Are you crazy? What could that spot have to do with headaches? Why would you do Prolotherapy there?”
Regardless, the patient agreed, and as soon as the solution entered that area, he looked at me and said, “The pain is gone.”
More commonly, it takes a few Prolotherapy treatments to the back of the head or neck to heal headaches. When neck pain is resolved, headaches also may resolve.
All the best towards living pain free!
