Scheduling a Prolotherapy Appointment

Many people get nervous before they schedule a prolotherapy appointment. Doctors’ offices can be intimidating because they rarely represent hope and positive thinking. Prolotherapy is one of those cases where it’s okay to be nervous, but also hopeful and positive. To help you prepare for attending and scheduling a prolotherapy appointment, this article will go over what you should do before your appointment, and what to expect during your first treatment session.

Before scheduling a prolotherapy appointment, make sure prolotherapy is a reasonable option for your condition. Set up a consult to discuss all of your available options so that you can make a comfortable and informed decision.

After scheduling a prolotherapy appointment, there are some steps you can take to make sure that the treatments are as effective as possible. If you are regularly taking pain medication, it is recommended that you stop two to seven days prior to your prolotherapy appointment. Prescription drugs, and even over the counter medications like Advil and Tylenol, work as an anti-inflammatory agent. Prolotherapy treatments are meant to encourage inflammation because this is what stimulates the body’s natural healing processes. If you are regularly taking narcotic medications speak to the doctor who prescribed them before stopping, as discontinuation of extreme substances could cause a negative reaction.

Be prepared at your first appointment. Bring any history of X-rays or lab results to make the process quicker and easier. Also, if you are a new patient, show up a few minutes early to leave time for necessary paperwork.

The first thing to be aware of when attending your first prolotherapy treatment appointment is that there is some pain associated with prolotherapy treatments. Our staff will do everything they can to make you comfortable, however, and to ensure quick completion of the injections. After the procedure you will rest with heat packs over the injected area to soothe it. The pain should not last, though you may feel some soreness and stiffness after receiving prolotherapy injections. You will be able to function as normal, driving, eating regularly, and operating machinery, if necessary.

The amount of prolotherapy injections required will vary from case to case. Most people, however, need from three to six visits before feeling satisfying levels of recovery. If you have any more questions about what to expect, or about scheduling a prolotherapy appointment, feel free to contact us. Our staff would be happy to give you more information.
