For Shoulder Pain, Prolotherapy Is A
Great Alternative To
Surgery In Most Cases
|
The shoulder is a very complex joint because of its wide range of motion. It
moves in many planes and therefore, can easily be injured because of its
inate instability with impact. As a result of this, we often see patients
with instability, subluxations, or dislocations of the shoulder.
Of course
there are also rotator cuff injuries and tears, labral tears, bursitis,
impingement syndrome, tendonitis, and a myriad of other injuries or overuse
syndromes we treat with Prolotherapy.
The good news is that Prolotherapy treatment works very well with all these injuries
and syndromes.
In ancient Greece, Hypocrates was known to have scalded the
axila (arm pit) of javelin throwers in the Olympics. This was a very crude
form of Prolotherapy that would create scar, and therefore limit the range
of motion of the shoulders of these athletes, and stop the joint from
dislocating.
Now, we have a refined form of Prolotherapy injections that can stablize
the shoulder and return a person to their sport or prior level of activity
using injections into and around the shoulder.
I personally had an injured shoulder from a weight lifting incident during
medical school. I was doing orthopedic surgery at the time, and thought it
would be "cool" to have an arthroscopic procedure since it seemed so benign.
After the surgery for impingement syndrome, my arm became full of fluid. It
took a year to heal to its pre-surgical state, and in essence was no better
from surgery.
I learned about Prolotherapy at my residency training at UCLA
and performed Prolotherapy on my own shoulder. To my amazement, my shoulder
was healed the next day and has been ever since. I never needed the surgery!
